Searching the 1851 census
I am intrigued by how any why my great great grandfather came to London so I am now going go back another 10 years to the see what I can find in the 1851 census.
My gg grandfather came from Chalfont St Giles in Buckinghamshire and I also know his age - so finding him is quite straightforward. There is only one person of the right name, age and place of birth in the census records on Ancestry.co.uk so I am quite confident I have the right guy.
In 1851 my gg grandfather was 18 and I find him listed as an apprentice and living in the house of a Baker and Confectioner. In the 1861 census he is listed as being a baker so it most likely that he was apprenticed to the person he was lodging with in 1851. It certainly looks like that but the biggest pitfall in tracing genealogy is making assumptions! In this case though, that is certainly the most likely scenario, but it is always possible that some other explanation is the true one.
He is now living in Newbury in Berkshire, so he has left his birthplace in Buckinghamshire but has not gone direct to London. Perhaps by going back another 10 years I will find out more about his roots.
There is only one more census that is available on line, that of 1841.
